My Protection Permit in Norway

If you are granted protection in Norway, UDI will grant you a residence permit based on your protection needs.

Your decision letter explains what type of residence permit you have, how long it is valid and what rights and obligations apply to you.

A temporary residence permit based on protection must normally be renewed before it expires if you want to continue staying in Norway.

You should apply for renewal well in advance of the expiry date. UDI recommends applying for renewal three months before your residence permit expires because it may take time to obtain an appointment with the police.

If you apply for renewal before your current permit expires, you may normally continue to stay and work in Norway while your application is being processed, provided that you meet the applicable conditions.

You should keep your contact information and address updated so that UDI and the police can contact you when necessary.

If you have been granted protection, you may also have a refugee travel document. The validity of the travel document is linked to the validity of the residence permit in many cases.

Your residence permit may be affected by certain circumstances, including changes in your situation or long stays outside Norway. You should check the conditions in your decision and the current information from UDI.

Always check the current UDI information before renewing your permit or making plans that may affect your residence status.
