Special Situations in Protection Cases in Norway

Some protection cases involve circumstances that require special consideration or a different procedure.

If you already have a residence permit in Norway and apply for protection, your situation may be assessed differently from that of a person who does not have another residence permit. You should continue to renew your existing residence permit when necessary while your protection application is being processed.

Some applicants may have their case considered under the Asylum and Migration Management Regulation (AMMR). This can happen when another country may be responsible for examining the application.

If UDI makes an AMMR decision to transfer your case to another country, you normally have the right to appeal. UDI will appoint a lawyer who will explain the decision and assist you with the appeal.

Some applicants may also receive a limited residence permit or have their protection status affected by changes in their circumstances.

UDI can consider whether a person should lose or have their protection permit revoked in certain situations, for example if the conditions for protection are no longer met or other circumstances affect the permit.

If you receive a decision concerning your protection status, read the decision carefully. It will explain your rights, obligations and whether you have a right to appeal.

Special situations can have different rules and deadlines. If your case involves unusual circumstances, you should check the specific information from UDI and seek legal advice when appropriate.
