Waiting for a Decision on Protection in Norway

After you apply for protection in Norway, you may have to wait before UDI interviews you and makes a decision on your case.

Most applicants first register their application at the National Arrival Centre. Many applicants then move to an ordinary reception centre and wait for their interview and a decision.

UDI places applications in a queue and processes cases according to its current priorities and procedures. The waiting time can vary depending on the type of case and whether UDI needs additional information or investigations.

You may receive an interview before UDI makes a decision. During the interview, you will have an opportunity to explain your situation and why you need protection.

Some cases take longer because UDI needs to investigate the case further, obtain additional information or determine which country is responsible for processing the application.

You should make sure that UDI has your current address, email address and telephone number so that they can contact you. You should also provide identity documents and other relevant information when requested.

If UDI needs more information from you, they will contact you. You normally do not need to contact UDI to ask when your case will be finished. UDI publishes current information about waiting times on its website.

Waiting times can change. You should always check the current information from UDI for the latest waiting-time information that applies to your situation.
