NAV in Norway
NAV is the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration. It is a joint gateway for state and municipal labour and welfare services.
NAV helps people with employment, unemployment, income support, social services and other welfare-related matters.
NAV administers many different benefits and support schemes. These include unemployment benefit, sickness benefit, work assessment allowance (AAP), disability benefit, pensions, parental benefit, child benefit and financial assistance.
NAV also provides services designed to help people find work, improve their qualifications and participate in working life.
The municipal part of NAV is responsible for certain social services, including financial assistance, information, advice and guidance. The exact services available can depend on your municipality and individual situation.
If you are unemployed or looking for work, you can register as a job seeker with NAV and use NAV's employment services.
If you need financial assistance, you can apply to NAV. Your situation is assessed individually, including your income, necessary expenses, housing situation and other relevant circumstances.
If you receive benefits from NAV, you must provide correct information and notify NAV about relevant changes. Changes in employment, income, family circumstances, residence or other conditions can affect your rights and payments.
You can contact NAV through nav.no, by telephone or by visiting your local NAV office when appropriate.
When you contact NAV, keep copies of applications, decisions, messages and documents. Read NAV decisions carefully because they normally explain the result, the period covered and your rights to appeal.
If you are unsure which service or benefit applies to you, NAV can provide information, advice and guidance.
