The Police in Norway
The Norwegian Police (Politiet) is responsible for policing, public safety and a range of services for people living in Norway.
For emergencies where there is an immediate danger to life, health or property, call 112.
For situations that are not emergencies, use the police's ordinary contact channels or contact your local police district.
The police can receive reports of crimes and tips about possible criminal activity. If you are a victim of a crime, you can report it to the police and receive information about the further process.
The police also provide several administrative services. These include passports and national identity cards, police certificates of conduct and certain services related to residence permits and protection.
If you have an appointment with the police concerning a residence permit or protection, you normally need to book an appointment in advance. The confirmation of your appointment tells you where and when to attend.
For many immigration matters, the process starts with an application through UDI. The police may then be responsible for tasks such as receiving documents, taking fingerprints or photographs, or issuing a residence card, depending on the case.
If you have been granted a residence permit after applying for protection, you normally need an appointment with the police to obtain your residence card.
Always bring the documents requested for your appointment. Check your confirmation and the official police or UDI instructions before attending.
The police website provides information about contacting the police, reporting crimes, residence permits and protection, passports and ID cards, police certificates and other services.
Use 112 only for emergencies. For non-emergency matters, use the ordinary police contact channels so that emergency services remain available for urgent situations.
