Social services and help from NAV

The municipal NAV office can provide information, advice and guidance about social and financial problems.

If you are experiencing financial difficulties, you can contact NAV even if you are not sure which type of support you may be entitled to.

Everyone has the right to information, advice and guidance from NAV regardless of whether they qualify for financial assistance.

Financial assistance is intended as a last-resort form of support when you cannot provide for yourself through work, savings, other income or other available financial rights.

NAV conducts an individual assessment of your situation. The assessment can include your income, necessary expenses, family situation, housing situation and other relevant circumstances.

The municipality may use indicative rates when assessing basic living expenses, but the final assessment must take your individual situation into account.

Social assistance can sometimes be provided for necessary expenses that are not covered by ordinary subsistence rates. This can include necessary housing expenses, electricity and other essential costs depending on the circumstances.

If you are in an emergency situation, tell NAV clearly that you need emergency assistance. Emergency assistance is intended to cover essential needs for a limited period.

If you cannot apply digitally, contact the NAV office in the municipality where you live or where you are staying.

You must provide information and documentation that NAV needs to assess your application. This can include bank statements, payslips, housing costs, bills and information about other income or benefits.

If your financial situation changes, you should inform NAV. Changes in income, employment, family situation, housing or travel can affect your rights and payments.

If NAV makes a decision that you disagree with, the decision normally explains whether and how you can appeal.

Keep the decision and supporting documents. They may be important if you need to ask questions, appeal or document your financial situation later.
