Passport and ID documents in Norway
A valid identity document or passport may be needed when travelling, identifying yourself or using certain public and private services.
Norwegian citizens can apply for a Norwegian passport and national identity card through the police.
People who have been granted protection in Norway may be able to receive a refugee travel document.
A refugee travel document can be used instead of a national passport for international travel, but it cannot normally be used to travel to the country from which you received protection. Before travelling, you should also check whether the country you are visiting accepts the document and whether you need a visa.
If you hold a temporary residence permit as a refugee, your refugee travel document normally has the same validity period as your residence permit.
An immigrant's passport may be available to some people who have a residence permit in Norway and cannot obtain a passport from their home country.
A residence card is different from a passport or national identity card. It documents that a foreign national has a residence permit in Norway.
If you have been granted protection, you normally need to obtain a residence card after your application has been approved.
Depending on your situation, you may need an appointment with the police to provide fingerprints and a photograph and to order or renew a residence card.
If your passport, travel document or residence card is going to expire, check the applicable renewal procedure well in advance.
Always check the current information from the police and UDI before applying for or renewing an identity or travel document.
