Personal identification number in Norway

A Norwegian personal identification number (fødselsnummer) is an identification number registered in the National Population Register.

People who are registered as residents in Norway can normally receive a personal identification number when they meet the conditions for registration.

The personal identification number is used to identify you when dealing with public authorities, banks, employers and other organisations.

Your personal identification number is personal and should be protected. Do not share it unnecessarily or publish it openly.

If you move to Norway, the Tax Administration (Skatteetaten) handles important parts of the population registration process.

Some people who are staying in Norway but are not registered as residents may instead receive a D number (d-nummer).

Whether you receive a personal identification number or a D number depends on your circumstances and your registration status.

Your identification number is not the same thing as a residence permit. A residence permit gives you permission to stay in Norway, while an identification number is used to identify you in Norwegian registers and services.

If your registered information changes, such as your name or address, make sure the relevant authorities receive the correct information.

Use Skatteetaten's official information when you need to check questions about the National Population Register, personal identification numbers or D numbers.
