Residence permit in Norway

A residence permit allows you to live in Norway for the period specified in your decision.

If your application for protection (asylum) in Norway is approved, you can be granted a residence permit as a refugee.

The type and duration of your residence permit depend on your situation and the decision made by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI).

A temporary residence permit can normally be renewed by application. You should check the expiry date of your permit and make sure that you apply for renewal before it expires.

If your residence permit is renewed, you will normally need a new residence card. You may need to book an appointment with the police to provide a photograph and fingerprints and to order the new card.

If you have been granted protection, you should follow the instructions from UDI and the police about your residence permit and residence card.

If you have questions about your specific permit, check your decision letter and the information provided by UDI. The decision letter contains important information about your rights, the duration of your permit and possible renewal.

UDI provides current information about different types of residence permits, applications, renewals and what to do after a decision.
