Citizenship for a former Norwegian citizen

If you were previously a Norwegian citizen, special routes may apply when you seek citizenship again. UDI also has guidance for people who held a Norwegian passport without having Norwegian citizenship. These are different situations, so first establish whether you were actually a citizen and how that citizenship ended.

Application or notification

UDI describes an application for certain former citizens and people who held a Norwegian passport. A separate notification procedure is available to some people who were previously Norwegian citizens, subject to its own conditions. Previous citizenship does not automatically mean you qualify for notification; the circumstances of your original citizenship, residence and current status matter.

Gather your evidence

Find records of your former Norwegian citizenship, or documents relating to an earlier Norwegian passport, as well as your current identity and citizenship documents. Review your residence history and the reason your Norwegian citizenship ceased, if applicable. Use the checklist for the procedure that matches your history, register it, pay any applicable fee and submit the required documents. The authorities determine whether your case meets the specific conditions.
