Citizenship for a Nordic citizen

Citizens of Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden have special routes to Norwegian citizenship. There are two procedures: an application and, for some adults, a notification. Which one fits depends on your age, residence history and other conditions.

Application

UDI describes an application route for Nordic citizens over the age of 12 who have lived in Norway for the last two years. You must still meet the other conditions for that route. Being a Nordic citizen or living in Norway for two years does not by itself complete the process.

Notification

UDI describes a notification route for Nordic citizens who are at least 18 and have lived continuously in Norway for the past seven years. The notification has its own conditions and documentation; it is not simply the same application under another name.

Prepare your case

Check which procedure matches your age and residence history. Gather proof of identity, Nordic citizenship and your time living in Norway. Register the appropriate application or notification, follow its document checklist and pay the relevant fee. The authorities must confirm that the conditions for the chosen route are met.
