Citizenship if you hold a residence permit

This route is for someone whose stay in Norway is based on a residence permit. Norwegian citizenship has its own conditions: holding a permit or having lived in Norway for several years does not automatically make you a citizen.

Check the requirements for your group

UDI assesses the length and type of residence, identity, age and other conditions for your particular situation. The required years can differ for children and adults and for some other groups. Adults may also need to meet Norwegian language and citizenship-test requirements. You can sometimes apply without already holding a permanent residence permit, but you must meet the applicable conditions and keep a valid residence permit while the citizenship application is processed.

Apply and submit evidence

Prepare your passport or other identity documents, residence history and evidence for any tests or exceptions that apply. Register the citizenship application, pay the fee if required, and follow the checklist and appointment instructions for submitting documents to the police. UDI decides the application after checking the individual circumstances.
