Permanent right of residence for an EU/EEA family member
A family member of an EU/EEA citizen may qualify for a permanent right of residence after five years of qualifying residence in Norway under the EU/EEA rules. Some family members can qualify earlier when the EU/EEA citizen meets special conditions connected to retirement, permanent incapacity for work or qualifying cross-border work. This route is especially relevant when your right to stay comes through your relationship with that citizen.
Check the basis of your stay
UDI looks at whether the family relationship and the EU/EEA citizen's right of residence supported your stay during the required period. The residence card is important evidence, but having a card alone does not prove that every condition was met for five years. A separation, a change in the family member's status, or time abroad may change which rules apply.
Prepare your documents
Gather identity documents, evidence of the family relationship, residence cards and material showing the basis for residence over the five years. Use the UDI checklist for family members and follow the application and document-submission instructions for your circumstances. The authorities decide whether the permanent right can be confirmed.
