Permanent residence permit

A permanent residence permit lets you live and work in Norway indefinitely and gives you additional protection against expulsion. This route concerns people whose residence is based on a qualifying Norwegian residence permit, rather than the EU/EEA right of residence.

Check your residence history

The required continuous residence period can be three or five years, depending on the type of permit. Not every temporary permit counts. Check the decisions for your earlier permits and whether any gaps or time abroad affect your residence period.

Check the other conditions

UDI also considers the requirements that apply to your age and situation, which may include income and Norwegian language or social studies requirements. Keep your existing permit valid while preparing the application; applying for permanent residence does not itself extend a temporary permit.

Prepare the application

Gather your identity document, residence history and the evidence required for your category. Register the application with UDI, follow the document checklist generated for you, pay any applicable fee and arrange the document appointment indicated in the application. UDI or the police will assess the documents and issue a decision. Do not treat the length of stay alone as approval.
