Using Norwegian at work

Norwegian language skills can be important when looking for work and when communicating with colleagues, customers and employers.

Some jobs require Norwegian because of the nature of the work. Other employers may accept English or another working language. Always check the language requirements in the job advertisement.

If you are looking for work, you can search for vacancies where English is listed as a working language. At the same time, improving your Norwegian can give you access to more jobs and make everyday communication at work easier.

Try to learn vocabulary connected to your profession. For example, learn the names of tools, equipment, tasks, documents and procedures that you use in your job.

Ask colleagues to explain unfamiliar words or expressions. You can also keep a personal vocabulary list and review it regularly.

Workplace Norwegian is not only about individual words. It is also important to understand instructions, ask questions, participate in meetings and communicate clearly when there is a problem.

If you do not understand an important instruction, ask the person to repeat or explain it. It is better to ask than to guess when safety or the quality of your work is involved.

Language practice can also be combined with work-oriented training. Some NAV measures include Norwegian training that is adapted to the workplace and to the participant's occupational goals.

The goal is not to speak perfect Norwegian from the first day. The important thing is to communicate, continue learning and gradually become more independent in Norwegian-speaking situations.
