Choosing secondary or vocational education

Compare school types, admission requirements and further-study routes before choosing a programme.

Compare the school types

After primary education, common routes include a 4-year liceum ogólnokształcące, 5-year technikum and 3-year branżowa szkoła I stopnia. They lead to different general and vocational outcomes. Ask a school careers adviser about the intended qualification, practical training and later matura options, not just the name of the school.

Check admission for your situation

Contact schools and the local education authority about current recruitment, available places and mid-year transfers from abroad. Bring school records and explain completed study. Different rules may apply to entering the first class and transferring to a later class. Vocational, sports, arts or bilingual programmes may require additional evidence, medical assessment or tests.

Prepare and follow the calendar

Check the school’s document list, translations, relevant exam results, preference system and deadlines. Keep the submitted application and monitor qualification and final admission separately. If documents are missing, ask the headteacher which assessment route applies; do not assume a place is guaranteed in every chosen programme.

Plan the next stage

Ask what completion and examinations are needed for work, further vocational study or university admission. Post-secondary and adult education can have different document and eligibility rules. University admission, tuition, scholarships, language evidence and residence status require separate checks; finishing a school does not automatically secure all of them. Discuss transport, costs and support before confirming a place.
