PESEL UKR: registration and status checks

How to register for temporary protection, prepare documents and check UKR status separately from the PESEL number.

Check eligibility first

PESEL UKR records temporary-protection status, not just an identification number. Eligibility depends on the current protection rules; Ukrainian nationality alone is insufficient. Protection in another EU state and certain existing residence statuses can exclude this route. New eligible arrivals must apply within 30 days of entering Poland. If late or uncertain, ask the municipality about your individual situation immediately.

Prepare for the visit

Use the current UKR form from the municipality. Bring a valid passport, a colour 35×45 mm photograph taken within the previous 6 months and meeting the official requirements, and documents confirming the personal details, family relationship and entry circumstances relevant to your case. If PESEL already exists, give that number. A parent or authorised guardian applies for a child; ask which children must attend for biometrics.

Apply and verify

Apply personally at any municipal office. The office records fingerprints from age 6 and a signature from age 12, with physical-impossibility exceptions. Registration is free. Check the confirmation and the active UKR entry; an ordinary PESEL confirmation does not prove active protection. Ask about Profil zaufany during the visit.

Keep the record current

The passport-verification deadline of 31 August 2026 for people registered solely by declaration has already passed. If affected, contact the municipality urgently; do not assume protection remains active or is restored automatically. Updating passport details is free and keeps the same PESEL. Absence from Poland exceeding 30 days can end UKR status; check the current rules and any applicable exceptions before travel.
