Polish citizenship: recognition and presidential grant
Citizenship recognition, a presidential grant and confirmation of existing citizenship are different procedures.
Choose the procedure
Recognition as a Polish citizen is an administrative route with statutory conditions. A presidential grant is a separate discretionary procedure. If you may already be Polish by descent, confirmation of existing citizenship is another question; obtaining a residence card does not answer it.
Recognition as a citizen
The Ministry lists several recognition categories with different qualifying residence and family conditions. One standard category concerns at least three continuous years on a permanent residence permit, long-term EU resident permit or right of permanent residence, together with stable regular income and a legal title to accommodation. Other categories use different conditions.
Language and documents
Check the accepted proof of Polish at a minimum B1 level and any applicable exemption, especially for minors. Prepare the required civil-status records, residence history and documents supporting your category, with official Polish translations where required. Do not apply one waiting period to every applicant.
Presidential grant
The presidential route is discretionary, has no guaranteed outcome or statutory decision deadline, and does not replace an expiring residence basis while you wait. Use the official instructions for filing through the appropriate authority. Keep your lawful residence independently maintained and check the rules for including children in an application.
