Residence for studies and other education

Full-time higher education, part-time courses and language study can require different residence procedures.

Check the type of education

The study residence route covers qualifying full-time higher education, doctoral school and certain preparatory programmes at eligible institutions. Part-time studies, postgraduate programmes or language courses may fall under another category. Admission to a course does not automatically establish eligibility for a study permit.

Prepare the evidence

Ask the university for the official admission or continuation documents and required electronic attachment. Prepare identity and application documents, health insurance, evidence of sufficient funds for living and return travel, and tuition payment evidence where relevant. Use the current checklist for the amounts, document types and exemptions.

Submit the application

For applications covered by MOS, arrange the university’s electronic attachment in time, sign and submit the application, and save UPO. Attend the office when summoned. Verify exclusions linked to your current status, including temporary protection, before choosing this route.

Work and changes during study

Work rights depend on the precise education and residence category; do not assume every course allows employment without another authorisation. If you leave the course, graduate or switch to work, check notification duties and the appropriate next permit. Study periods also have special counting rules for long-term EU residence.
